Chapter Eighteen
“Aiko!” a voice called her, and hurriedly, the said girl turned around. She was faced with Hiroyuki.
“Hiro?” she asked, widening her eyes. What’s he doing here?
It was the weekend, and Aiko didn’t want to stay cropped up in the house. She decided to go to the nearby shopping centre to clear off her mind. How would she have expected that Hiroyuki would be here as well? “Shopping?” Hiroyuki asked, scratching his head. “Haha, what a silly question for me to ask,”
“Hiro, I..” Aiko mumbled, wanting to say something, but didn’t know what is appropriate. “You.. changed,” Aiko said, looking at Hiroyuki.
“Somehow, I feel like I have known you all over again, you seemed different when you came into the school, until… now,” Aiko explained, looking at Hiroyuki, from his head all the way down to his feet.
“I guess so, I probably behaved that way, maybe to masked myself,” Hiroyuki answered, looking away.
“Masked myself, so that it makes me feel better for treating you in that way last time,”
Aiko gave a bitter smile. “I’m leaving,”
“Wait, Aiko. Would you mind if you hang around with me for awhile? I promise I will leave soon,” Hiroyuki asked, as he stopped Aiko by grabbing her wrist. Looking back, she sighed. “Fine, for awhile only,” “Thanks!!” Hiroyuki have practically beamed in delight.
Both of them did lots of things that afternoon. Hiroyuki have brought Aiko to a classy café to have a bite, before they took purikura(Japanese neoprints) together in the small machine, although Aiko have clearly declined. They played the arcade- shooting guns, dancing, car racing. To be truthful, that afternoon was the best afternoon Aiko have ever felt, ever since she came to Japan.
“Thanks for accompanying me, I’ll get going, take care, Aiko,” Hiroyuki greeted. Aiko felt that something wasn’t right, and that she had a feeling within her- to ask her to stop him. “Hiro!” Aiko shouted, raising out her hand, but retracting it soon. Hiroyuki have turned his back, and looked at her with his awed eyes. “Aiko?”
“Is.. there something wrong?” Aiko asked, her head lowering, looking in the other direction. “Aiko?” Hiroyuki asked again, as he turned, and walked towards her. Reaching in front of her, Hiroyuki have softly patted her head. “I guess there’s really nothing that I could have hide from you,ne?”
Aiko raised up her head, staring at Hiroyuki. He smiled, and retracted his hand, trying to make up his sentence. “I’m leaving here,”
“Leaving?” Aiko asked. “Yes, I’m going back to Singapore,”
“Why?!” Aiko shouted, unable to believe his words.
“You know, I actually have run away from home to come over here to find you, I was being a jerk, using a ‘holiday’ with my girlfriend as an excuse, now that I have broken up with the ‘girlfriend’ I had back then, my parents are urging me to go back. The semester is starting soon too,” Hiroyuki said, glancing around.
“But..!” Aiko didn’t know what she should say. Is it right to ask Hiroyuki to stay? Somehow, a part of her heart didn’t want him to leave, though.
Hiroyuki just smiled. He said nothing, and just smiled as he stood in front of Aiko.
Silence has surfaced between the two figures standing at the shopping centre. Multiple passer-bys glance at them, as both of them stood there quietly, not moving an inch.
Before he left, Hiroyuki have managed to stutter out the question he wanted to ask the said girl in front of him.
“Aiko, are you willing to go back with me to Singapore?”
Aiko slumped onto the bed, as the scenes she and Hiroyuki went through this afternoon played in her mind continuously. She hugged her pillow, and buried her face inside it. What is she going to do?
“Aiko, are you willing to go back with me to Singapore?”
Hiroyuki’s voice echoed in her head time and again, as Riko, Yuto, Yamada faces all flashed passed her mind.
Chinen.
Aiko felt so lost, that she could cry. Opening the drawer, she took out the photo, and carefully touched Hiroyuki’s face. She remembered the scene when Hiroyuki have dropped down on the floor, and cried. “Hiro, can I trust you?” Aiko whispered, tears flowing down from her eyes.
School was something Aiko have always looked forward to, but apparently, not today. Entering the classroom, Riko have called out for her, waving her hands. Aiko slowly walked over to Riko, and smiled to her, as she settled down onto her own seat. Moments later, the teacher have come in, settling everyone down. “Class, I have something to announce, due to Saito’s family condition, he will soon be going back to his own country.” The teacher announced. Everybody gasped, as they turned around and look at Hiroyuki, who was sitting at the back of the class. The teacher then continued, “Alright, Saito-san, would you want to give your regards to the class?”
Hiroyuki have walked in front of the class, and smiled while scratching his head. “Eh, thanks for giving me great memories in the class. And..” he stopped, and his eyes fixed on Chinen, then Yamada, and followed by Yuto. “I’m sorry if I have done anything that make anyone of you unhappy,” he then bowed down, expressing his apologies. “And really thank you,” Hiroyuki then bowed down again, before he went back to his seat. Aiko’s eyes were fixed on him all the while.
“Aiko? What’s wrong, you seemed to be.. in a daze,” Riko commented during lunch break. “You seemed unusual today, is something wrong?”
Aiko shakes her head, as she stuffed her teriyaki chicken into her mouth. Biting it, Hiroyuki’s voice once again echoed inside her head.
“Aiko, are you willing to go back with me to Singapore?”
Aiko stopped her biting, as she looked up, to realize Chinen was looking at her. Blushing, she turned away. Hurriedly, she packed up her lunch. “I’m done,” and took up her bento, and left the rooftop hurriedly, stating there’s something she need to do.
“Chinen, are you not going to chase her?” Riko asked, picking up her pickles inside her bento, and pushing it into her mouth. Chinen looked back, and looked at Yuto. Yuto nodded his head, and Chinen placed down his chopsticks, and run after Aiko.
Yamada by then have lost his appetite, and lied onto Yuto’s laps. “Yama-chan, what’s wrong?” Yuto asked, patting his head. “I feel like, something terrible is going to happen,” Yama-chan muttered. Riko looked over to Yamada. “Yama-chan, what are you? Psycho?” Yamada pouted, and looked over to Riko. “It’s not! It’s just a feeling,” Yamada said, turning back to face Yuto, whose head was directly above him. Yuto then muttered, “I hope nothing is going to happen too,” as his hands slowly wandered around Yamada’s face. Riko just looked up, staring at the azure blue sky above her.
“Ai-chan! Wait!” Chinen called out. Aiko have stopped in her tracks, and turned around to be facing with Chinen. “Ai, what’s wrong?” Chinen asked, as he walked over to her. Aiko have back-tracked. She didn’t know how to face Chinen. It just wasn’t the right time, for her to see him now.
“Ai-chan?Ai?” Chinen mumbled again, as he realized Aiko backtracking. Right in the other corner, Hiroyuki came by.
“Aiko-chan?” Aiko turned around. Right at the other side, was Hiroyuki. She widened her eyes. She felt as if that she was now caught in between two person, and she just didn’t have any idea where to go. She looked at Chinen, he’s clearly the one she love. But why can’t she find any courage to run up straight to him, and hug him? And she looks at the other side, Hiroyuki. She clearly once loved him, but that’s the past. But why does she feel so hurt in her heart when she sees Hiroyuki, and that her heart beats fast when she’s near him?
“Aiko-chan,” Hiroyuki whispered once again. Aiko turned, to be faced with Chinen. Chinen was locking his gaze on Aiko, not leaving her sight once. Aiko clenched her fist, as she started to turn to her left, and walking towards the direction. Chinen’s eyes widened, as the distance between him and Aiko gets further apart.
“Hiro, let’s go,” Aiko whispered, as she held onto Hiroyuki’s wrist, and dragged him away. Right on the passageway, was only left with Chinen.
It was only Chinen alone there. Labels: Goodbye
